Visit to Brookhurst
Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Neubert, and four AVID seniors made a visit to the 8th grade AVID students at Brookhurst Junior High School on Friday, March 13th. The 8th grade students were given a challenging team-building activity to complete without talking to their group, and then they were given a chance to ask any questions to the seniors or Mrs. Neubert. Applications for the AVID program at Savanna High School were left with the Brookhurst students.
Savanna's senior AVID students had the opportunity to share with the 8th grade students what colleges they had been accepted to as well as what they appreciated about AVID.After the visit with Brookhurst, Mrs. Hill treated her seniors to a lunch at Mimi's cafe to show her appreciation for their hard work.

Tooty Fruity Friday
The 9th grade AVID class had a fun Friday making their faces out of fruits and vegetables. They were asked to only use fruits or vegetables, and they had to write a paragraph describing their faces. After completing their faces and paragraphs, they were able to share with the rest of the class.
Here are some paragraphs written from some of the students (keeping any spelling or punctuation errors as written by the students):
“I made my face a coconut because my face is brown like a coconut. My eyes were the wholes in the coconut because it’s convinient to draw. My nose and eyebrows are bananas because they can look like an eyebrow. My ears are watermelon slices, because watermelon slices can look like ears. My hair was pineapple top leaves, because they are pokey.”
“I chose to make my head out of a melon because it kinda matches my skin color. I chose apples for my eyes because of the saying “The apple of my eyes.” I chose a banana for my mouth because I have very long lips & I like to eat bannanas because they help me not get cramps during swim practice.”
“I used pineapples for my hair because of the pointy ends. Grapes are my ears because it makes things when you put it together. The oranges, bananas, and apples are my eyes because they make my eyes bright. A strawberry is my nose because I have a sweet sense of smell. An avocado is my mouth because I have a big smile.”
“I chose lettuce for my hair because when you peel it, it’s long. I chose a banana for my smile because people say I have a big smile. Then peas for my eyebrows. Then blueberries for my eyes. Then green beans and a blueberry for my bow.”
“For my head, I chose a cantelope because it round. For my eyes, I chose watermelon because I have big eyes. I chose a banana for my lips because they are big and I have big lips. I chose a pineapple for my nose because they are sort of big and my nose is medium size. For my hair I chose kiwis because they are brown and so is my hair.”
“I chose a peach for my head because at times I can be very sweet. I chose lemons as my eyes because, when people look at my eyes, they think I also look sweet, but then people try to open me up, I might give off a sour stare. I chose a banana for my mouth because it tastes good and a grape as my nose because…there’s no reason.”
“I picked a radish a my face structure because it gets really pointy as it goes down, just like my face. I picked baby carrots as my eyes because they’re long. For my hair, I just put the little leaf stub on the top of the raddish because it’s simple. For my lips I chose a small tangrine peice because it symbolizes what comes out of my mouth, sometimes sweet but yet sour.”

College Research Project
The next big project for the 9th grade AVID class is the college research project. They were given the assignment sheet today with all of the directions for the assignment. This can also be found on Mrs. Neubert's website, called "College Research Project."
Students, in groups of three, will pick a college to research from using the website http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/. Each student will write his/her own essay, and each group will make a power point presentation about the college. Then that group will present the power point to the class, with each student having a speaking part.
Mrs. Neubert recommends that at least one person in each group has a flash drive or a thumb drive to store the power point presentation and bring it to class to present.
Important due dates with this assignment are:
College due 3-5-09
Introduction due 3-9-09
Rough Draft due 3-17-09
Final Draft due 3-25-09
Power Point due 3-25-09
Presentation dates will be determined later.
Students have also been given the opportunity to earn extra credit by turning in the final draft of the essay before 3-25-09. This can be done by emailing the final draft to Mrs. Neubert (neubert_l@auhsd.us), or printing out the typed essay and turning it in early.
